   After a devastating drought last summer that decimated our orchard in coastal South Carolina, we decided to start fresh. With the help of Full Bloom Nursery in Loris, SC, we purchased new, healthy trees and plants from owners Wayne and Kathy.    It was my mistake to assume these were meant for indoor dwarf potted citrus trees. They turned out to be much larger than I anticipated, clearly designed for outdoor, gigantic citrus trees. I was surprised by their size when I received them. While I’m sure they are great products, they seem too big for smaller house trees, even those in 4-5 foot pots. These are definitely intended for outdoor use. I still plan to give them a try somehow.

   I received this package for free through the Vine program and have been using fertilizer spikes similar to these for over a decade. While I typically opt for more affordable brands when available, I have also used Miracle-Gro with good results. Throughout the years, I’ve used fruit tree spikes, evergreen spikes, and regular tree spikes.    I appreciate the idea behind this product, but it’s important to note that you can’t simply pound in a bunch of broken chunks. To use it effectively, you should take the stick, pound it into the ground at an angle, and then insert either chunks or whole pieces.

   I have been growing two peach trees in large pots on my terrace in midtown Manhattan for over 12 years. These trees suffered from peach tree leaf curl for two years and were in poor condition last fall. Despite my efforts to pick off bad leaves and use sprays, I was considering removing them. Remembering the positive results from using spikes in the past, I decided to try them again last fall as a last resort. The outcome was amazing!    Update: I saw significant results after 6 weeks of using this product! I started using Spikes in early April and by late May, my fruit trees are flourishing with an abundance of fruit. I recommend driving a stake into the ground before inserting the Spikes to make the process smoother without any breakage. A rubber hammer works well for this. I have had great success with Miracle-Gro products in my garden compared to Jobe’s, so I prefer Miracle-Gro.
