   After researching clay pebbles, I decided to give them a try. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the results. I found that they did not retain moisture as well as I had hoped. When I used them to pot an orchid after soaking them, I found that they were too lightweight to adequately support the plant. Despite appreciating the uniformity in size for easier potting, I ultimately found that they did not meet my expectations.

   Update on my second purchase in October 2023. My first bag of Leca was great, but this second bag didn’t meet the same standard. It had a lot of dust and broken pieces, unlike the first bag. I usually opt for smoother Leca to prevent root entanglement and make repotting easier, but this batch had rough beads. Even after multiple soaks, the beads didn’t sink to the bottom as expected.    I have used these LECA balls in various ways and found them to be effective as a drainage layer and for promoting soil aeration. They worked well in shallow water applications. However, my experience with using them for rooting cuttings was less successful as most of the balls floated. Despite this, they have performed satisfactorily for my main purposes.

   As a first-time user of leca, I must say it is an excellent alternative to soil. My plants have been thriving in it, and I no longer have to deal with soil scattering around the house when watering them. Additionally, the leca gives the plants a more sophisticated appearance. I highly recommend it.

   My wife purchased a small bamboo plant from a market, and we struggled to make it thrive until we tried using these clay pellets as a substrate. After about a month of being in the pellets, the plant started growing steadily. I make sure to change the water once a week.
